Biography
David studied Linguistics at Durham University, where he co-founded the Fountains Theatre Company, with whom he was involved in four plays a year. Between that and the bar, he somehow found time to complete his degree, and went on to a postgraduate course in acting at Mountview Theatre School. Since graduating in 1998, he has had extensive experience of touring theatre, visiting most parts of Britain from Jersey to Inverness, getting a taste of the high life in Paris, and surviving 4 bomb scares along the way (only one of them was fake).
He has been involved in several high profile productions, including Tabs’ Productions version of Macbeth, which was nominated for the Manchester Evening News Award for Best Visiting Production; Creation Theatre Company’s Hamlet at BMW Plant, Oxford, which coincided with the launch of the new Mini by having one driven on stage; and the hilarious Rough Crossing at Salisbury Playhouse, starring Matthew Kelly, in which David was required to sing a duet while playing a moving piano.
David has also been writing poetry since his physics A-level course. This annoyed his tutor, who was forced to turn a blind eye when David still achieved top marks. And so he continued to experiment with words and rhythm instead of Bunsen burner and test tube. During lectures at university, his writing was happily mistaken for note taking, and more recently, various temping jobs have finally seen him being paid to write. Don’t tell the temping agencies.
His one man shows, "Jacob's Bladder (and other libel stories)" and "Gangrene and Grapes" premiered to great success at the Edinburgh Festival 2004 and 2005, as did his comedy-murder-mystery-musical "The Thing and I" (see reviews page). He has since been booked into theatres and hotels, garnering him such prestigious labels as "an English Tom Lehrer" and "The reincarnation of Noel Coward".
